LEARN HOW TO BEST CARE FOR YOUR LAWN

WATERING & MOWING

It is possible to have a beautiful green lawn, even with our current water restrictions. Most people tend to over water their lawns, but if you keep your lawn healthy, you can get away with the minimum water. In other words, make sure that your lawn is nice and healthy by giving it the proper feeding (correct foliar feed & fertilizer for each season) and by keeping diseases, weeds and insects at bay and then you won’t have to water that often. During summer you can stick to watering about 3 times a week (which fits in perfectly with the prescribed water restrictions) and in winter, you could even get away with less if we have the occasional down pour.

HOW MUCH WATER?

The soil should ideally be dampened to a depth of at least 15cm whenever you water your lawn. This promotes root growth and ensures that you have a healthy lawn that can cope better with times of drought, like the hot, dry summer season. In other words, if you maintain your lawn and keep it healthy, you might even be able to save on your current water bill and won’t have to mow it as often as it won’t grow as fast. The chances of your lawn contracting any diseases or being infested by insects are also less when you water correctly.

SOIL TYPE & LAWN LAYOUT

It is always good to know what type of soil (loam, sand or clay) you have as some types absorb water better than others. Sloped areas in your garden should also be monitored a bit more carefully as water tends to run off such areas instead of soaking into the soil. In some instances, you might have to water those areas more often.

THE TIME OF DAY

Early morning is a good time to water your garden. If you water at night or late in the evening, your lawn will be wet for extended periods of time, which will make it more susceptible to diseases like fungus.

WEATHER

It’s always a good idea to monitor the weather and to switch your irrigation system off when it rains. This will obviously save some money and will make your lawn less vulnerable in terms of insects and diseases.

WATERING METHOD

If you have an automatic sprinkler system, make sure that the sprinklers displace water evenly and effectively and that they’re all in good working order. If your system is not working correctly, it could mean that some areas don’t get any water, while others are being flooded, which will surely result in damage to your lawn.
